Receiving Calls and SMS on Primary Number While Using eSIM

Using Your Primary Number Alongside an eSIM

Yes, you can readily receive incoming calls and SMS on your primary number if your device supports Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) technology.

Your mobile data will be routed through your Unilink travel eSIM, while your primary physical SIM card remains active to handle standard calls and text messages.

Dual SIM Support on Apple Devices (iPhone)

The number of simultaneously active lines depends on your iPhone model:

  • iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, and newer models (iPhone 14, 15, 16 Series):

    • Support either two active eSIMs simultaneously or one physical Nano-SIM + one eSIM.

  • iPhone 12, iPhone 11, iPhone XS, XS Max, and iPhone XR:

    • Support one physical Nano-SIM + one eSIM concurrently (you can store multiple eSIM profiles in memory, but only one eSIM can remain active alongside the physical SIM).

  • Other Manufacturers (Android):

    • Most modern Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, and Xiaomi devices also feature DSDS capability (Nano-SIM + eSIM). Check your device manufacturer’s technical specifications to verify dual-active line support.

Important: How to Prevent Unintended Roaming Charges

To avoid international data charges from your home carrier while keeping your physical SIM reachable for calls:

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data).

  2. Under Cellular Data, select your Unilink eSIM as the default internet line.

  3. Toggle off "Allow Cellular Data Switching" to ensure your phone never automatically routes internet traffic through your primary SIM if network coverage drops.

  4. Select your primary physical SIM in the line list and ensure "Data Roaming" is turned OFF.
